ARTIST PROFILE

Maria Anderson

Maria Anderson is an abstract artist who works to perform a series of abstract works. She commonly works on found objects with reflective and transparent qualities. She incorporates an essence of nature within her energetic forms and brush strokes. Her work challenges personal identity within the surrounding environment and exposes how we engage with our surroundings by juxtaposing the reflective image against her opaque expressive forms. She uses a limited color palette to isolate focus upon her figurative mark making and works on a variation of scales with a tendency to maximize impact and engagement of the viewer. The ambiguity of the work is determined by the significance of its location, making the work adaptable dependent on the environment of which it is placed which generates a unique experience to each individual. Currently her work is responsive to the isolation caused by the coronavirus pandemic where the only other person was her reflection in the mirror and the only sense of the outdoors was a view through a sheet of glass. She then uses this to reflect on self-identity and how women are often obsessed on over their shape and form reflecting on society’s idea of modern-day beauty standards.
